Single-Channel Video Installation and Media Sculpture
2021–2022 · Bremen, Germany
“Take a tingling bath of ideas and let dreams and thoughts splash around. Your own imagination is limitless if you don't turn off the tap.”
Idea Bath is a media art project exploring the relationship between imagination, technological mediation, and the ways in which media shape our perception and social interactions.
Developed in two stages between 2021 and 2022, the work examines the tension between the seemingly limitless possibilities of creative thought and the technological structures through which ideas are communicated, circulated, and experienced.
In its first iteration, Idea Bath appeared in April 2021 on public billboards across Bremen as part of the Hochkantfestival, bringing its playful invitation to imaginative freedom into the urban environment.
In 2022, the project evolved into a sculptural video installation, developed in collaboration with IT systems architect Dirk Hoffmeister. An industrial monitor was repurposed and physically transformed into a self-contained media object, designed to display a single, continuously looping animation.
The animation combines moving imagery with a sequence of brief, aphoristic statements reminiscent of fortune-cookie messages. Oscillating between playful encouragement and ambiguous advice, these fragments evoke the language of everyday inspiration while inviting reflection on how meaning is produced and consumed through media.
The monitor's deliberately restricted functionality — capable only of switching on and off and displaying its predetermined content — introduces a subtle contradiction: a work celebrating the boundlessness of imagination is presented through a technological object whose possibilities have been radically reduced.
Through this interplay of poetic language, moving image, and repurposed technology, Idea Bath reflects on the relationship between creative freedom and the systems that frame, transmit, and constrain it.
